Dinghy training

Nautical Garden

The Nautical Garden program is part of the optional introductory course intended for children aged 5 to 8 years old.

SailCan 1 and 2

The SailCAN program is Sail Canada’s national dinghy training program.

In the SailCAN 1 and SailCAN 2 levels, sailors are introduced to the essential skills of sailing under the supervision of an instructor.Les marins apprennent à naviguer seul et effectuer les manoeuvres de base de manière contrôlée.

SailCan 3 and 4

The SailCAN 3 and SailCAN 4 levels aim to consolidate fundamental skills in various conditions. At this level, sailors can successfully execute maneuvers for tactical and strategic purposes. They can also sail in local regattas. 

SailCan 5 and 6

SailCAN levels 5 and 6 are based on the complete integration of maneuvers, sail trimming and rigging handling in racing conditions. Sailors learn to perform all skills in competitive situations to be able to perform precise maneuvers successfully in all conditions. 

The SailCAN 6 level corresponds to the highest level of the SailCAN program which aims to generate and maintain the interest of sailors in practicing sailing for life.

Cruise training

Introduction to cruising sailing

This is one of the core certificates in Sail Canada’s cruising sail training program. This training is aimed at people who have no experience in sailing and who want to get started or people who want to go on a discovery sailing excursion.

Elemental Cruise

This training allows you to learn the essential maneuvers on a sailboat. This certificate allows you to develop the skills necessary to become an experienced crew member or skipper aboard a 6 to 10 meter sailboat, by day, in favorable to moderate conditions.

Intermediate cruise

This training allows you to develop experience as captain of a 9 to 12 meter sailboat. The emphasis of this certificate is placed on the management of life on board and aims to lead trainees to be captain for extended cruises in coastal waters.

Advanced cruise

This training allows trainees to develop their abilities in order to lead them to become experienced crew members or captain on a 10 to 15 meter sailboat, up to 100 NM from the coast, day and night and in all weather conditions.

Navigation training

Basic Coastal Navigation

The coastal navigation course is divided into two parts:

The 1st course is called elementary coastal navigation course.We learn the basics of navigation, the role of the navigator, the tools available and how to use them to plan a safe day cruise. More information here.

Intermediate coastal navigation

The 2nd coastal navigation training is the intermediate coastal navigation course in which are taught: route plotting, navigation by day and night, dead reckoning navigation, advanced GPS functions, tide calculations, etc. … More information here.

Advanced and astronomical navigation

For the advanced navigation certificate, trainees learn advanced piloting methods that allow them to navigate in all visibility and weather conditions. More information here.

The astronomical navigation certificate allows you to learn the principles of navigation using the sun, the moon and the stars, which are very useful for safe offshore navigation. More information here.

Additional training

Pleasure craft operator card

Transport Canada requires all operators of motorboats, including motorized sailboats, to hold the Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

Les instructeurs certifiés par Voile Canada pour enseigner la voile croisière a minima de niveau élémentaire sont accrédités par Transports Canada pour former les plaisanciers, fournir les examens et émettre la carte CCEP.

Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime)

The Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime) is required for anyone using a maritime VHF radio.

Instructors certified by Sail Canada to teach cruising sailing at a minimum elementary level are authorized by the Canadian Pleasure Squadrons to give the maritime radiotelephony course to boaters and to grant them the CRO(M). More information here.

Offshore survival

The Offshore Survival course is a course aimed at experienced sailors who are considering taking part in offshore or ocean racing. The course covers personal safety equipment, emergency communications and signals, search and rescue, weather forecasting, damage and fires, etc.

This course is approved by Sail Canada and World Sailing. Participants who successfully complete the course receive an offshore survival course certificate valid for 5 years.
