L\u2019univers sportif occupait une place fort importante dans la vie sociale de la derni\u00e8re partie du XIX<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">si\u00e8cle, autant aux Etats-Unis qu\u2019au Canada. De nombreuses revues couvraient les activit\u00e9s de plein-air pour en promouvoir les valeurs. Le yachting constituait un spectacle tr\u00e8s couru par le public, mais il faisait figure&nbsp;d\u2019un \u00ab&nbsp;\u2026&nbsp;sport de roi pour les plus favoris\u00e9s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;\u00bb.&nbsp;La remarque visait les \u00e9quipages professionnels des&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sandbaggers<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;qui appartenaient \u00e0 de riches hommes d\u2019affaire et&nbsp;qui&nbsp;faisaient en outre l\u2019objet de paris sportifs.&nbsp;Ces engins extr\u00eames par essence portaient d\u2019insolentes surfaces de voilure qui r\u00e9clamaient plus d\u2019une dizaine d\u2019\u00e9quipiers pour ballaster l\u2019engin en d\u00e9pla\u00e7ant au vent une trentaine de sacs de sable de 25 kg.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Une&nbsp;vague de r\u00e9gatiers&nbsp;porteurs de nouveaux id\u00e9aux sportifs&nbsp;allait bousculer les pratiques&nbsp;et signer l\u2019arr\u00eat de mort des&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sandbaggers. Le&nbsp;Corinthian&nbsp;Sport<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;pour lequel il n\u2019existe d\u2019autre traduction que sport amateur voulait \u00ab&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mettre&nbsp;\u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9preuve le courage et l\u2019habilet\u00e9 de nos marins amateurs&nbsp;plut\u00f4t&nbsp;que la taille de leurs bourses<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;\u00bb.&nbsp;Les intentions du&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Seawanhaka&nbsp;Corinthian&nbsp;Yacht Club&nbsp;apparaissaient donc clairement dans le nom qu\u2019il s\u2019\u00e9tait donn\u00e9. Le club se voulait un chef de file de cette nouvelle culture sportive et&nbsp;proclamait que la r\u00e9gate amateure&nbsp;\u00ab \u00e9tait la seule v\u00e9ritable et agr\u00e9able&nbsp;forme de yachting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;\u00bb et qu\u2019il \u00e9tait pr\u00e9f\u00e9rable que les amateurs \u00ab naviguent sur leur propre&nbsp;bateau\u2026.plut\u00f4t que&nbsp;de regarder du personnel r\u00e9mun\u00e9r\u00e9 s\u2019attribuer tout le cr\u00e9dit. \u00bb&nbsp;En rempla\u00e7ant les exigeants&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sandbaggers<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;par des voiliers \u00e0 la fois plus modernes et plus modestes quant \u00e0 leur taille, mais aussi plus faciles \u00e0 man\u0153uvrer par des \u00e9quipages r\u00e9duits, on voulait ouvrir la pratique du yachting \u00e0 un plus grand nombre, et ce, \u00e0 moindre co\u00fbt.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Le&nbsp;Britannique&nbsp;Arthur&nbsp;Brand, membre du Minima Yacht Club de Londres, grand amateur de course de canot \u00e0 voile, fut le premier \u00e0 relever le d\u00e9fi de la Coupe&nbsp;Seawanhaka&nbsp;d\u00e8s 1895.&nbsp;Il fit sur place l\u2019acquisition de&nbsp;<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spruce IV<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, un 15 pieds conforme \u00e0 la jauge. Les&nbsp;Am\u00e9ricains&nbsp;prirent ce d\u00e9fi tr\u00e8s au s\u00e9rieux et construisirent sept bateaux qui s\u2019affront\u00e8rent durant des s\u00e9lections.&nbsp;<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ethelwyn<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, un plan de&nbsp;W. P. Stevens fut choisi comme defender et emporta facilement toutes les manches. Tout allait pour le mieux&nbsp;dans la nouvelle Mecque du yachting de Long Island.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Le d\u00e9fi du Royal&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">St. Lawrence Yacht Club de Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00c0 l\u2019automne 1895,&nbsp;George Herrick&nbsp;Duggan,&nbsp;chef&nbsp;ing\u00e9nieur&nbsp;pour la Dominion Bridge&nbsp;Company&nbsp;\u00e0 Lachine, persuade le commodore James Ross, actionnaire du Canadien Pacifique,&nbsp;de lancer le RSLYC dans le d\u00e9fi de la Coupe&nbsp;Seawanhaka&nbsp;l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9&nbsp;suivant.&nbsp;Les r\u00e9gatiers de Montr\u00e9al ont les moyens de leurs ambitions.&nbsp;Ils construisent localement&nbsp;pas&nbsp;moins de&nbsp;dix-huit&nbsp;voiliers pour la s\u00e9lection disput\u00e9e sur le lac Saint-Louis.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On peut qualifier&nbsp;Duggan&nbsp;d\u2019architecte naval autodidacte.&nbsp;\u00c0&nbsp;l\u2019adolescence, il s\u2019initie \u00e0 la navigation et \u00e0 la construction navale en gr\u00e9ant et retapant une vieille chaloupe de sauvetage.&nbsp;Sur le cordon littoral de L\u2019Esplanade \u00e0 Toronto, l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve du&nbsp;Upper&nbsp;Canada&nbsp;College&nbsp;fr\u00e9quente assidument les chantiers maritimes qui seront autant des lieux d\u2019\u00e9tude que d\u2019apprentissage. Plus tard, son bagage d\u2019ing\u00e9nieur et sa passion pour la r\u00e9gate viendront encore renforcer ses aptitudes \u00e0 l\u2019architecture navale.&nbsp;Notons au passage qu\u2019il n\u2019existe pas au Canada \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque d\u2019architecte naval sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans la conception de yachts de course, contrairement aux Etats-Unis o\u00f9 plusieurs sont en activit\u00e9.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">C\u2019est dans les bureaux o\u00f9 l\u2019on fabrique les&nbsp;gabarits&nbsp;de bois des futures pi\u00e8ces m\u00e9talliques de la Dominion Bridge que l\u2019on dessine et construit&nbsp;<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Glencairn<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, l\u2019un des six prototypes de&nbsp;15 pieds&nbsp;con\u00e7us par George&nbsp;Duggan. C\u2019est ce sloop,&nbsp;propri\u00e9t\u00e9 du commodore Ross,&nbsp;qui est finalement s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 pour d\u00e9fendre les couleurs du club. Il faut citer&nbsp;le britannique&nbsp;Frederic Perry&nbsp;Shearwood,&nbsp;lui aussi&nbsp;ing\u00e9nieur civil&nbsp;et r\u00e9gatier. Reconnu&nbsp;pour ses talents&nbsp;avec une&nbsp;r\u00e8gle \u00e0 calcul,&nbsp;il&nbsp;sera l\u2019ins\u00e9parable&nbsp;partenaire de&nbsp;Duggan&nbsp;dans l\u2019aventure de la Coupe&nbsp;Seawanhaka, tant&nbsp;sur la planche \u00e0 dessin que sur l\u2019eau.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Les Canadiens se font une fiert\u00e9 de construire un yacht enti\u00e8rement constitu\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments nationaux. Les voiles et l\u2019accastillage sont fabriqu\u00e9s \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, les clous forg\u00e9s maison, le cordage de manille tress\u00e9 localement. La coque est bord\u00e9e de pin blanc \u00e0 l\u2019exception du bouchain de flottaison en c\u00e8dre. Le pont est en c\u00e8dre rouge de Colombie Britannique.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La seconde \u00e9dition&nbsp;du&nbsp;Seawanhaka&nbsp;International Challenge<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Preuve de la foi dans le nouvel \u00e9lan du&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Corinthian&nbsp;Sailing<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;et de sa jauge de 15 pieds, vingt-sept prototypes sont lanc\u00e9s pour la s\u00e9lection du&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">defender<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. La comp\u00e9tition est ouverte \u00e0 tous les clubs des Etats-Unis. La cr\u00e8me de l\u2019architecture navale am\u00e9ricaine se lance dans la course.&nbsp;La pr\u00e9sence de&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nathanael&nbsp;Herreshoff, l\u2019architecte qui a dessin\u00e9 le vainqueur de la Coupe de l\u2019America Cup en 1895, donne une bonne id\u00e9e du niveau de comp\u00e9tence engag\u00e9 dans l\u2019affaire.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">C\u2019est&nbsp;pourtant&nbsp;un jeune architecte de 23 ans, Clinton Crane, r\u00e9gatier et ing\u00e9nieur comme&nbsp;Duggan, qui remporte la mise avec&nbsp;<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">El&nbsp;Heirie<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. \u00c0 premi\u00e8re vue,&nbsp;<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Glencairn&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">et&nbsp;<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">El&nbsp;Heirie&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">pr\u00e9sentent des similitudes.&nbsp;Duggan&nbsp;lui-m\u00eame dira qu\u2019ils avaient \u00ab pratiquement la m\u00eame forme \u00bb.&nbsp;La comparaison s\u2019arr\u00eate l\u00e0.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Au milieu du mois de juillet 1896, devant des navigateurs am\u00e9ricains stup\u00e9faits et&nbsp;humili\u00e9s,&nbsp;<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Glencairn&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">remporte les trois manches&nbsp;de la Coupe&nbsp;Seawanhaka.&nbsp;Duggan&nbsp;vient de leur servir un&nbsp;KO technique.&nbsp;Dans son \u00e9dition d\u2019ao\u00fbt 1896, l\u2019\u00e9diteur de&nbsp;<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rudder&nbsp;Magazine<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u202fThomas Fleming Day, \u00e9crit\u202f:&nbsp;\u00ab&nbsp;L\u2019ampleur de la d\u00e9faite subie pour la premi\u00e8re fois par un yacht am\u00e9ricain est difficilement explicable. La victoire incontestable de G. Herrick&nbsp;Duggan&nbsp;est un \u00e9v\u00e8nement rare dans les annales du yachting. Le bateau canadien \u00e9tait sup\u00e9rieur \u00e0 toutes les allures, distan\u00e7ant facilement&nbsp;<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">El&nbsp;Heirie<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Ce triomphe ne serait pas aussi significatif s\u2019il n\u2019y avait eu vingt-sept bateaux con\u00e7us par les meilleurs designers de la c\u00f4te Est. C\u2019\u00e9tait une t\u00eate contre vingt. C\u2019est cela pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment qui rend remarquable l\u2019accomplissement&nbsp;de M.&nbsp;Duggan. \u00bb<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La jauge de 15 pieds et le coup de g\u00e9nie de&nbsp;Duggan<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Comment George Herrick&nbsp;Duggan&nbsp;a-t-il pu&nbsp;\u00e0 ce point&nbsp;surclasser&nbsp;tous ses adversaires sur la planche \u00e0 dessin? \u00c7a sauterait&nbsp;aujourd\u2019hui&nbsp;aux yeux d\u2019un designer&nbsp;de yacht,&nbsp;mais personne \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque n\u2019avait rep\u00e9r\u00e9 les faiblesses&nbsp;de la jauge des 15 pieds.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">La formule de&nbsp;jauge&nbsp;\u00e9tait des plus simples, pour ne pas dire simpliste. Les deux facteurs de performance entraient en comp\u00e9tition dans la recette.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cette jauge faisait l\u2019impasse totale sur le volume des car\u00e8nes, c\u2019est \u00e0 dire sur la portance hydrodynamique et la stabilit\u00e9 qui en d\u00e9coule.
